Howdy, this one is a picture for Nicole's desktop at work. I brighten up her work space with pictures quite often.

It's an odd design and I'm not sure why I went for it. I was inspired by a guide I bought when I was in New York with her. It was a guide book to the Rockerfeller center, but it was a reprinted version of the original guides they had and it was all two colour print and just glorious classic design, which I just couldn't resist buying.
Also I can't think of the Rockerfeller building without humming this in my head...

Howdy, in a bizarre ironic situation today's update is a cat also. It's a teaser of a picture I am doing for my fiancé's birthday present. It's of a female cat. Called Tilly. Not going to say what it's for precisely as it's a present and meant to be a surprise and I know she'll see this teaser anyway. The mouse is a clue though.

I think it's a must that artist/illustrators can draw cats. It's such a common feature of indie comics. Or maybe that's just the ones I'm reading...

Howdy and HOLY GOAT NIPPLES, BATMAN! Yes this is the third post in a single day. I don't even blog that often that's the weird part! Anyway.. I went away and carried on doodling in my sketchbook and did a really sweet picture of the Doctor and Amy Pond. I had Doctor Who on the brain, what with the series being back on again and it being absolutely, mind-blowingly amazing. I kinda did the legs wrong when I sketched it in my book so that was my main reason for scanning it in. To fix that. I just coloured it out of boredom haha!

Howdy it's been a while since I've just drawn for the hell of it. I had been looking through Jamie McKelvie's online blogs and journals and got really inspired. Anyway while i was doodling random indie girls and boys I decided to give the Gertie Harry character of Snapper's a quick try out, before doing the current Gertie Harry comic cover challenge on Doomed Patrol (hit the link in the side bar to see the challenge we have). It turns out I'm pretty good at doing decent portraits of indie and punk people. Who knew?! So I coloured the Gertie one and just figured I would share it with y'all.

Platform 2011 Live Art Wall

Howdy, I was invited to do live art at Hull's big Gaming expo. along with a few other faces I know. It was held earlier today in Hull's KC Stadium. We got massive areas each to paint on. Floor to ceiling, literally had to stand on chairs to reach the top. Being a gaming event it was going to be games related art, and figuring the others I was painting with would go for Sci-fi or fantasy game art, I decided to do THE most gaudy coloured mario picture I could possibly churn out. I settled on painting and marker-ing a "Mario Party", you know, like the game only it was at an actual rave party. Naturally Bowser is on the decks and so on.

Howdy, pokemon black and white come out in a few days in the UK and I totally didn't realise it was so soon. I would have chosen it as my Doomed Patrol choice had I known. Anyway here's a picture of Pikachu, in both the Black and White versions.

This is in no way related to anything in the game. Took like 10 mins to do, so it's not spectacular. Mainly just did it for the punchline.

Howdy, I am doing pictures honestly, I just don't feel like a lot of it is post-worthy on here. So as a side project to this very blog I am also doing a comic review site. I read a lot and enjoy of the books I read week in week out. Most major websites seem to have very differing opinions on mainstream comics than I do so I wanted to get my own voice out there. Even if nobody listens. If you have an interest in comics, then feel free to argue your point in the comments. If you want to get into comics more then feel free to use this to see what you'd like to pick up, or hell give me reading suggestions when you see what I read and like. Hell if you just want a quick laugh at the most random comic panels I find that week, then come and look. Followers would be greatly appreciated.

Influences

Howdy, I know these things have been on the go for ages but I somehow felt a pull to do one finally. Influence maps. Artists that influenced my style through the uni years. Cartoons and films that made me want to draw my own pictures and stories in the first place. Plus the music I could happily listen to continuously while being creative. The things that influence my humour and how I grew up. There's also a lot more stuff that I didn't want to jam in there, like specific mainstream comics or other films I love. Things that haven't been in my life long enough to influence it like recent artists I found out about, Scott Pilgrim comics and so on.
Anyway this is just a quicky so have a look if you want. This would probably be better off in an about me section. Note to self: make one of those.

Howdy, when I was reading comics last night and I did a Chloe Noonan fan art (fart) piece. Looked pretty swish so I coloured it today and I might just try and get it in the fan art (fart) section on Marc Ellerby's site.

Howdy and I hope you all had a great Christmas! As it's now past the big day I figured I would share a few of the pics I did. I forgot to ask permission from everyone I did commissions for, to be able to put them up here, so there's just a few going up for now.

After Thought Bubble

Howdy, and hello to the new followers. I'm guessing from the recent convention and the vanishing of yet another box of business cards!
I had a great time at this years Thought Bubble. Plenty of time to chat with creators while taking it in shifts at the stall! Didn't actually make or bring a lot to sell but made a lot of dough through selling my old comics and also making lucky bags. My and snapper's zine effort went down well also. Now that I've done it once from behind a stall I can happily say that I want to start preparing now for next years one. Starting with tidying up the look of this blog and updating with COMICS more regularly. I'm going to aim for a weekly update at least. Once I get into the swing of things I'll see which day is best for the post!
Anyway this is the stuff I ended up getting for myself while we were there: The Everyday, Some original Chloe Noonan pages, Spandex and Scott Pilgrim teddies! Amongst other things!

Along with just two sketches, this year, but by my two favorite creatives there:

Howdy, Yep the collaboration with Snapper52 is done and whisking it's way to the printers. It will be on sale at Thought Bubble Festival this saturday. (OMGeee that's really close now!) Come down and get a copy!
It costs £2 and it's 28 pages, 14 by each of us, black and white A6 and features comics, interviews, photography and more! Limited to a print run of 50 and I only have half of them to sell!

100th Post! New Zine! Exclamation Marks!!!

Howdy, I'm currently working on a zine, collaborative style, flip book with Snapper52 to sell at Thought Bubble. It'll be black and white, 28pg A6 format. 14 pages each!
Doing some splash page illustrations and including some of my vast collection of photography from the trip to NYC. These are the line work for the characters. Yes, it's the Paroxysm Quintet. Thought I'd forgot about them didn't you? I haven't used ink like this in a long time!

There's also going to be lots of short, increasingly more offensive, Snowman and Polar Bear comics. But you only get these above ink pic's as a teaser. You have to wait to buy it! There's bound to be some left over after Thought Bubble so I'll have to set up an etsy shop or something! Tatty byes!

These two are from in the guy's toilets and I added a cheeky underwear set to it as well.

The very pale "goth girl" because it was hard to mix up a good skin colour in the dark!

The hunky/ gay cowboy in the ladies. I want to see peoples profile pics of them bent over in front of him. Please? Not that I'm being perverted, just that I would feel famous if someone did!

Pole dancer that I was very proud of because it goes around an actual pipe in the place. Doesn't work from all angles but still pretty cool!

This is the one they all referred to as "the tranny" I think its because of the jaw... Probably because we were drawing on bricks! Still I was not a happy bunny!

Ragna Blades' Prostitutes which took a while to do but boy do they look good. A lot of detail and work went into these!

The shop front's including Ragna's Prostitutes and Mickey Chez's recurring shop keeper character- Prickly Mick!

Well That still ended up being a lot of photos. Even when I narrowed it down. We still have a bit of the smoking area to do outside with wagons and a mountain range etc. But not for a few weeks yet!
It has been an interesting collaboration so far. Me and Jim did the bulk of design work but let Blades and Mickey Chez run loose later on. Chez became very useful as a letterer and I got Jim to fix up my hands... because the usually look dodgy! But all in all good fun and the opening night was very fun and very messy for all of us. It's a great club and I recommend you all check out the Uk's only Wild West Show Bar

Fistful of Feedback

Howdy, I've been reading through some of the feedback on Millarworld from the Fistful of Comics anthology. There are some very strong analysis coming through. People being very critical in the feedback thread about other people's short stories in the book. So I wanted to share my mostly great reviews.

The best of the one page gag strips in my opinion. Great build up and a perfect punch line. I think this story had alot of good things going for it. A simple joke sure, but it was matched with really great art. The story header was very clever, as was the panel layout. All in all talent really came through here.

This is a story I'd love to have draw, simplistic but effective, for one page David really hit a good level of pace, Matt's art made it all the more special and an excellent opening to the book.

Great David Meadows writing and humor. It's really hard to pull off a "surprise ending" on a 1-page strip, but somehow David and Matt made it work.

I think this is the best one pager in the book. Art is not my cup of tea, but you can't expect a humor strip to take itself too seriously. When I let the words in the panels sink in, it really put a grin on my face, and that ain't an easy feat.

Brilliantly simple and effective story, I wish I was able to think up such good ideas for one-pagers as David, and the art works with it as well, although, honestly, anything outside of Dave McKean abstractia would get the job done. I do like the shading, very Saturday-morning-cartoon-like, and the layout is nice. The simple backgrounds and integrated title are good touches.

This I loved. The art is stylish, just cartoony enough and knows how to work in black and white. It doesn't outstay its welcome, telling a simple but funny joke smartly. Actually, I could have lived with the final panel getting its own splash page, if space wasn't an issue.

I will update this post when more are put up. A lot of them just say similar things to be honest. But it's all good food for my ego! Tatty Byes!

Spoiler Alert!

Howdy, I'm probably behind on reporting this. I've being hearing about it for a few months before i finally downloaded and listened to it. But one of my favorite musicians, Eddie Argos from Art Brut, is a huge comics fan. Firstly I just found out that he does a regular column about comics on Playbackstl.com And it's rather quite good even if it isn't always up to date releases. You can tell he knows his stuff!

Which leads me onto my next point, what I got all excited about. He has collaborated with a bunch of other secret musicians to create songs based entirely around DC comics characters. Art Brut's single DC comics and chocolate milkshake, was one thing, but covering the origins and entire stories of Batman, Booster Gold (Eddie's Favorite character apparently) and Blue Beetle is all together amazing. It really is some of the nerdiest indie music I have heard in a long while.

Howdy, here's the linework for "The Rescue Mission" I think I posted the roughs a while back but this is what I just started colouring in today. Just a work in progress post at the moment. More soon. I am genuinely disgraced at the dead guy in the fourth page. That is REALLY getting re-drawn. I'm happy with the rest of it. It may not be startling and it may not be my best work but from the colouring i've done so far I feel it vastly improves the pages as a whole.

Howdy just got a lovely large parcel full of comics through the door. That I'm in. First page FTW. Get in touch if you'd like to buy one.
It was done by Millar-worlders. There is some really great work in it. Some of my favorite pages shown below. It's a shame a few of the comics in it seem to have bee done to the wrong specs as they are really blurry. Also the cover is noticeably pixelated. Tsk Tsk shame! Could have done with a wraparound cover or summat also cos it looks odd with the same image back and front. Anyway enough moaning- The majority of this is awesome!

Gay Pride Banner

Howdy, It's been a while since I posted so there are a few things to show. Firstly a banner I did for kids to colour in at the recent gay pride thing in Hull. I was asked by an old friend, and even though it was only a quick job there should be some more permanent banners made for future events. The poster was 12ft long and about 2ft tall (roughly 1 and a half Hemsworth's) I was given a short amount of time to do it and it was originally an unpaid job so I only went about it with a few marker pens, attacking it with child friendly cartoons. Hit the image for detail cos its HUGE!

And excuse the shoddy photo joining together as well. Hopefully will be given some photo's of it coloured in by the kids which should be interesting to see. Tatty Byes!

Cowboy Club

Howdy (first time that introduction made sense) Recently got commissioned to turn an 80's bar into a wild west saloon bar. It's currently painted like a castle inside (not a clue why!) But they had some pretty cool ideas of what they want done with the place so here's the space I'm working with,
A huge interior bar area,

A small corridor with toilets,

And a pretty large outdoor smoking area,

It's an absolute dump as it is currently but it's been done up really nice before we start it. It was a much bigger job than they first described and the timescale they had in mind meant I would have had to rush it if I did it alone so I've enlisted a small team of people who's style wont clash too wildly with my own.

The area splits neatly into 5 parts. The dance floor will have outdoor scenes of a street view of a wild west town. With the dj both behind bars as the sheriff's office and an arched wagon design over a stage with another jail that's a dance cage in the corner. The bar area will be the inside saloon scene with poker players, drinkers, bar fights and saloon doors. This will lead onto the corridor with the loos which will be some kind of cat house/ brothel. Perhaps with them kinky pictures above the urinals. The outside smoking area will have more shop fronts and a desert scene with wagons as benches, and some indians in the distance. They are also after the front of the building being painted too, so I'm thinking desert again with a few cacti for good measure.

Currently waiting to start the job and just reeling off ideas. Might draw them small and project them up to get them more accurate me thinks!

Howdy, well it seems like the work I did for the fistful of comics anthology got a lot of interest on the millarworld forums and I have been approached by three different writers all asking for me to illustrate their scripts and add them into the pool for submissions for Mark Millars magazine CLiNT. This one is a B-movie alien attack with a twist. So far I have some character designs and the rough page layouts. Subject to change of course but here you go.

With a logo by me and lettered by Jim Campbell since last I posted about this. But now you can enjoy the story by David Meadows. This is my A Fistful of Comics submission and will be one of the first pages featured in the anthology of new creatives.

There is a helluva lot of really amazing artwork and stories going into this and I am amazed it isn't getting more press.

Mural Part 2

Howdy this is my next bash at work on the wall. I took up more wall space then I thought I would get a chance too. I added an exit sign for the car park and did a few of my own characters in there too. There's a huge portrait of a pink lass, my Paroxysm Quintet characters and a spaceman reminiscent of the one in my Fistful of comics strip.

Howdy these are the images from the first day of the mural. The mural is in the huge car park of the Just save indoor market at the end of Spring bank west in Hull. They wanted the graffiti covered up so they got some of us involved.
Not too shabby for my first time with a spray can! It's Batman and Robin in the audi from Ashes to ashes. Yeah I went there.

Howdy, Just figured I would flash off what I have done so far for the comic page in the anthology. Mostly line-work but starting to add greyscale/ zipatone effects soon! The working title is gone and it is now called THE LONG SHOT.

Graffiti Style, I Think I Love You!

Howdy. Somebody recently forcefully showed there praise about one of my more graffiti style images. I believe I used it for one of the massive buttons on the home page of my college built website. I should have believed him because this image i bashed out in about an hour and half. Including colouring. Looks mint! Oh and also it's a band poster for my mates band (Check 'em out!), and I meant to do more music related images for my assessment. Too late now though cos it was yesterday! Anyway my assessment went alright in my opinion and I have a good future plan so I aren't fussed about my grade 'cos this looks mint, and I will always keep creating!

A Fistful of Comics

Howdy, I got good news today. I will be appearing in the 'Fistful of Comics' anthology. It is a 52 page, black and white anthology comic, full of 1 to 6 page stories. It is organised by one of the head guys who run the Millarworld Forums and is intended to coincide with the release of 'CLiNT' organised by Mark Millar himself. Hence the two Clint Eastwood puns. (Also note that CLiNT reads as a very naughty word when read from a distance)
It was a professional project where writers had to be paired up with artists, letterers and possibly inkers. There is a two month deadline overall. I will be of course entering the CLiNT open admissions too.
Here is the list of creators involved in the stories with the feedback from the editor;

Mike, as you're doing both sides you'll get to manage your own time, however I'd like to see your full script before the end of May just to read it over and make sure the historical aspects are clear.

This is all down to you Jonny. I think it'll work better being played for laughs, or as social commentary, but it's different and therefore interesting.

You can either do single page strips or oen complete story, but make it a full story - no introductions only. You've got a hell of an artist JW so make good use of him.

The Website Design

Howdy, Don't worry, I aren't abandoning the blog, I am just making a website in a really old fashioned way to get like 5 points out of 24 for one of my modules for uni. Despite already having a web presence and midway through creating a decent and fancy Wordpress blog with Comicpress enabled programing. I feel it would be better suited for showing off my short stories and would allow me to get better with the deadlines of a weekly slot for uploading the funnies and stuff. But hey, I have all summer for that now!
Anyway these are the designs it went through. My original idea was to have full colour images that linked to the different sections of the site. Then it turned into a spectrum of colour on the home page.

This changed though when I tested the page at uni and found that the way we had been shown to make a site made it appear in the top left quarter of the page as it wasnt large enough in size. So like everyone else in the class i swapped that for a white background so as not to notice that it appeared in a portion of the screen. Choosing to swap the dark grey for a black so that it looked more like my work featuring on the site.

I found the experience... annoying and cant wait to be playing around on a decent site soon! Tatty byes.

Howdy time for a return to form and some regular black and white funny short stories. This one is from when we all went to scarborough and we were sat in a restaurant and my dad let loose with his usual crappy jokes. There is a whole wealth of laughs to be had from random stuff he has said in the past. Even if were laughing at him rather than with him.

If like Nikki you also didn't get the joke, than i shall explain. It's because American Indians were put in reservations while new people were taking over the colonies etc. However its got double meaning cos he could have reserved a table. Yeah I know it wasn't funny in the first place... least of all when you explain it. Enjoy, tatty byes!

Short Narrative

Howdy I am currently working on a short story about a deaf guy. Well he has super hearing. So the opposite of deaf, but he still cant hear properly in his workplace. Trouble is he really wants to ask a co-worker out but he wont hear the reply. Until he discovers that he can hear perfectly well in a ridiculously loud, music filled club. So he approaches her and good things happen. It sounds stupid tbh but I kinda liked the idea. Plus while i have been deaf recently due to a rather nasty ear infection, I discovered that it is possible to hear perfectly in clubs. Weird. But at least the story must have some facts to it, probably not enough to put a "based on a true story" banner on it. Still here are the roughs and drawings un-coloured and in the wrong order so that it will be a surprise when i post the whole thing. Enjoy and Tatty byes.

Howdy i am designing my business cards today and i figured some original images would be in order so here they are:

One is a self portrait and the others are random girls i made up, but used some toys as reference for. Thank you Dazzler and She Hulk for taking part. I am well proud of the image of the falling girl, i havent inked that well in aages!

Yep I did a pretend comic cover and i think it works! It looks retro enough which is what i was going for because it matches my ink an brush style work. Might make it a regular thing to do a cover for the comic but not the comic?! Yeah that might work after all it looks good and the cover itself contains somewhat of a narrative. Kinda reminds me of the old style comics where the cover was the first panel of the book. Anyway enjoy, and i am off to finish tidying the Mattcave. Tatty byes.

Short Story About Making Stories

Howdy, inspiration for the short stories that i constantly churn out now, apparently, come from everywhere. Fleeting thoughts, real events, day dreams etc But i just had a fab idea of doing some comics about making the comics?! Howdy, When i started the blog i didn't think i would keep it up to be fairly honest. I create so many accounts for random online services, and either ignore or forget about them. But this blog. I am genuinely having fun with it. At the moment i have barely any followers and a 50th post doesn't sound that impressive but at least i haven't done like 5 posts or more a day. I feel like i am updating in a regular if slightly random fashion, but i do have a lot going on right now. I am proud of all of the work i have posted on here, and feel that when i get a few more followers through a bit of promotion at the shows and conventions, that they will have fun looking through the work already on here.
So today was the first time in a while that i have drawn the super hero group i made called the Paroxysm Quintet. It felt good. I left them alone for a while and came back at them with a fresh sense of thought and i made an A3 poster of them! Enjoy,

I do have a lot of stuff on shelves so it takes me a while. Today was one of the rare occasions where i decided to get some cleaning done. Then i got bored and drew a comic about cleaning... and then finished the cleaning. Again its a bit experimental, it's done in pure felt tip this time and also only has four panels. Yep i am renting out the other two panels to a polish couple. True story. Enjoy,

Howdy. Another Short comic this time about my new coat. Again its very loosely based on real life but i also let my imagination run with the joke for the finish line. It features my fluffy coat but also stars Nicole, my gorgeous girlfriend, Dr Jones, Manga Mattruss, plus the first appearance of Snowman and Polar Bear outside of their own comic. Love a bit of experimenting. Just finished reading Love the way you love, with art by Marc Ellerby, hence all the colour halftone and the manga references in this strip. Enjoy,

Howdy, I managed to churn this out before lunch so have a snoop and tell me what you think. It is VERY loosely based on a real event. And when i say real event, I mean that apart from the very first line, it is all bollocks! Enjoy!

I was put off from finishing this from the roughs i did about 6 months ago because i figured with it featuring Paul and the comic shop, that there were like laws against drawing false idols or something... I dont know i only got so far into the bible before i got bored. Think i read up to the point were Hagrid told Jesus he was a wizard. But as a gag strip the comic works, so i aren't too fussed.
This will probably end up with the rest of the one page short stories in the Skylark Lounge anthology for uni. Tatty byes.

Howdy having only just realised that the Bat-Matt of the previous logo could be turned into any superhero with the word "man" at the end i concocted the new Iron-Matt image. Of course it doesnt work as well as the Mattcave but i can live with it. Here is the previous logo and the workings for the new one!

What next? Spidermatt, Supermatt, Powermatt...? Might do it themed to go with major comic movie releases. Oh the possibilities... Tatty byes!

Howdy blog, sorry i havent talked to you in a while, but well i was... you know... ~~playing pokemon~~ doing lots of hard work! Anyway Its nearly the next calendar month so heres the next picture for the Nicky and me calendar. Its easter themed and has lots of chocolate in it.

In other news, I have scanned in all 6 of this years sketch books and I'm organising them into a proper art book that i intend to get printed along with my final short story book. I have so much more work than i though i did! And here is a doodle of me saying that,

Howdy again. This is the final image for the Headspace exhibition. Had so many more ideas and should have actually started them sooner so as to get them done. Plus you can submit up to ten pieces of work...? Thats a lot oh well guess i should check up and do them earlier. Read about the design a toad for the Hull money waste thing in the paper so i might have a crack at that!
